The Institute is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the field of pedagogy in Russia. It dates back to 1922, when the Scientific and Pedagogical Institute of Methods of School Work of the People's Commissariat of Education of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) was established, which was later transformed into the State Research Institute of Schools. During the Second World War two institutes were created on its base, which became part of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the RSFSR. They are the Research Institute of Teaching Methods (by 2014 - Institute for the Content and Methods of Education of the Russian Academy of Education) and the Institute of Theory and History of Pedagogy; the both afterwards became the basis of the consolidated Institute for Strategy of Education Development of the Russian Academy of Education.
